Unshaped refractory materials are defined as” mixtures consisting of aggregates, additives, and binders, prepared for direct use in the state of delivery or after adding suited liquids”. In contrast to refractory bricks, they are without specific shape and are in majority placed in larger sections behind molds and templates forming a monolithic lining. Gunning installations without the requirement for a mold are increasing due to ease of application and higher installation speed.
Alumina is one of the most common materials used in ceramic applications. Its strong chemical bonds and physical stability provide superior properties in key application areas ranging from fine-grained technical ceramics to wear-resistant ceramics and electrical insulators.
Refractory bricks have specific shapes and are in the majority fired at high temperatures to form a ceramic bond. The raw material mixture, type of compaction, and the heat treatment determine the final properties of dense shaped refractory materials.
Investment casting is used to produce parts with complex geometries and tight tolerances. Alumina is used in the shell building process to provide strength, creep resistance and thermal management during casting. Regulating heat transfer is critical in the solidification process and facilitates the casting of metals with different grain structures.
